Adopted Dog Returned To Shelter 11 Times Before Staff Discover Why He Keeps Coming Back
Gumby is a hound mix dog, who was brought to the Charleston Animal Society shelter back in 2014 when he was just a puppy. He formed a strong bond with the staff and his adoption was a bitter-sweet experience for everyone. Little did they know, Gumby would soon come back.
Gumby was returned to the Charleston Animal Society shelter 11 times. Not because he was mean or too aggressive, but because he was too energetic and had a tendency to escape.
Despite him being adopted seven times by different families, he always managed to find his way back to the shelter. Eventually, the staff realized he has a reason to return.
The CAS staff had officially given up on placing Gumby for adoption, but they hadn’t given up on him.
His forever home was at the shelter, the only place he never tried to escape from.
The shelter staff realized that he is not just his happiest self at the shelter, he also loves to comfort anxious or fearful dogs.
The staff believed Gumby kept returning to CAS because “he knows he has work to do.”
He plays with dozens of dogs every day and is provided with all the love and care he could ever want and need.
Gumby became an integral part of the shelter as he began helping the behavior team on a regular basis during behavioral demonstrations.
He may not have a traditional home setting, but he certainly has found his purpose.
The staff also discovered the serum from Gumby’s blood has healing properties. He became a blood donor for kittens with eye infections!
Now, Gumby has a forever home in the very shelter he always returned to.
